Labor Day September Event
3 mile run + 2.5 mile kayak, starting & ending in Mathews Courthouse area, transition point at Williams Wharf. Sound like a good time to you? Then feel free to join us in 2022 on a slightly different schedule in 2022: Saturday, Sep 10th. That’s right: it’s free & open to everyone. It’s a ‘just for fun’ event, but don’t get me wrong – there are some who will be competing with each other, but all in good fun.
High Tide on 10 Sep 2022 is 9:24am ET
2022 Schedule. Participants will drop off kayak at Williams Wharf at 8:00am and drive to starting area at Put-In-Creek Park. We’ll start the event as close to 8:30am as possible. Participants will run from Mathews Courthouse, turn right onto Rte 14 for < 2 miles and turn right on Williams Wharf Road. Run 1 mile to the end of the road and begin the paddle portion of the duathlon. The paddle distance is approx 2.5 miles – you’ll follow the shoreline on your right. The river narrows close to town and becomes Put In Creek – ends at the dock/ park/ pavilion back where you started.
Typically held on Labor Day, the change in 2022 was 100% due to the tide schedule. Put In Creek is only accessible at high tide – and on Labor Day that occurs at 4:20am & 5:15pm (not ideal event times) – so we opted to reschedule to Sep 10th.
Location. This event will start and end at Put-In-Creek park and pavilion in Mathews Courthouse. Just a few years ago, the town of Mathews installed a new dock and kayak ramp there so getting in and out of the water is really easy. The creek is tidal so we schedule it to finish very near high tide to ensure no one gets stuck in the mud.
Timing. If you’re interested in your overall time, be prepared with your own watch/ timing device. The course is on open road & open water – competitors will participating at their own risk. Event will be held rain-or-shine – it will only be cancelled on race morning due to lightning (posted on Mathews Outdoor Club Facebook & Instagram pages). Questions can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
