The Mathews Outdoor Club has been keeping a secret, and we’re excited to share our recent feature with the Local Scoop Magazine in their June 2025 issue, “The Islander Regatta Offers a ‘Church’ Experience.” Read article here.
The Islander Regatta is a spirited event that blends paddle sports with Island tranquility. The story highlights our founder, Christine Johnson, and how the event started as an impromptu nine-mile paddle with friends and blossomed into a cherished community event emphasizing camaraderie and connection with the outdoors. Described as “a church experience” on the water, the Regatta captures the essence of Gwynn’s Island’s close-knit coastal community.
Organized by the Mathews Outdoor Club (MOC), the Regatta welcomes all non-motorized vessels, including kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards. The event is supported by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and local volunteers, and includes rest stops and a post-race celebration.
A huge thank you to one of our generous event sponsors, @oysterhavenva! This charming vacation rental on Gwynn’s Island, Virginia is the perfect waterfront escape—and they’re helping make this year’s paddle even more enjoyable by sponsoring our much-needed rest stop. Be sure to check them out if you’re dreaming of a peaceful getaway with stunning bay views and coastal charm.
This marks the 4th year of the event and you can join us for the 2025 Islander Regatta on Saturday, June 28, 2025, 8:00 am to 1:00 pm, Gwynn’s Island in Mathews County.
