Mathews Outdoor Club
Hello! I am a lifelong fitness enthusiast who recently ventured into the “fitness organizing” realm. My husband and I relocated to Mathews County in the fall of 2013 and relish the opportunities available in this remote area of Virginia. The flat roads with very little traffic are ideal for running and cycling – and the proximity to water lends itself to swimming & paddle sports.
Growing up, I mostly played team sports: softball in high school, which continued on during my stint in the US Air Force and for many years afterward. I completed my one-and-only marathon in 1998: the Marine Corps Marathon in just under 4 hours (3:55:39). Then, looking for a change of pace, I took up cycling and brushed up on my swimming skills to complete my first triathlon – in Stockholm, Sweden.
My most recent “epic” adventures were Cycle for the Cause in 2017: a 3-day, 275-mile fundraiser ride from Boston to NYC . The following year – while I still had my “cycling legs” – my husband and I biked from Montreal to Quebec City in 5 days as part of Cycle Canada tour.
I found all of these experiences more enjoyable because I could share them with other participants. Settling down in Mathews County opened the door for me to organize events and get that same experience of comradery. Mathews Outdoor Club events are low-key, as competitive as you want them to be, and suited for just about any skill level. I look forward to meeting you at our next event – please check us out on these social platforms and make sure to say “hello!” when you are here.
