Event Details

The Event. Run along peaceful, rural backroads in beautiful Mathews County, Virginia. Enjoy the fast, flat course that winds through dirt, gravel and paved roads and past the serenity of one of Virginia’s last great countrysides. The Marathon route will take you to 3 of the county’s beaches; the Half Marathon will also lead you to a local beach. New in 2022: Run the marathon course as a relay!

The Course. You will enjoy this course that winds around quiet backroads and through the town of Mathews. Stick around after the race and enjoy the weekly Farmers Market on the town’s courthouse green.

The Cost. The cost for the full marathon is $75; the half marathon registration is $50. Note: to help limit the contact between participants & volunteers, there is no race day registration. Pre-registration also allows us to purchase the correct sizes and numbers of race day swag.

The Swag. All event participants will receive a commemorative hooded sweatshirt and finisher medal. Top finishers in the full & half marathons will be recognized along with age group categories for each event.

Health & Safety

The health & safety of event participants, spectators, volunteers and community residents are top of mind as we plan & prepare for our events. Check back to this section for the latest adjustments to this event in response to Virginia state guidelines. Important to note: the Mathews Marathon & Half Marathon will proceed on the date scheduled barring any weather-related disruptions. The start times and post-event activities may be subject to change as noted here. Direct email communication will be sent out to registered participants as well.

The MOC continues to monitor the VA state guidelines with regard to hosting race events, which have increased (to 1000). Registration for the event is capped at 500; the race director has opened a waitlist to accommodate for any cancellations. Post-race activity location (Put In Creek Park and Historic Mathews Courthouse) allows for plenty of room for social distancing.

Designed by local resident and Mathews High School student, Jordan Hunley, this one-of-a-kind artwork is the emblem of the Mathews Marathon.

“It was a fantastic course, beautiful day, and we hope to do it again next year!”

Sandy T, 2022 Half Marathon finisher

Wrightly Reed, Race Director

Wrightly Reed has lived in Mathews County since 2014 – relocating from Fairfax County in Northern Virginia. Wrightly started running seriously after moving to Gwynn’s Island and is a regular at local area races. His training runs grew longer and longer, until he found himself competing and completing his first ultra marathon in 2020!

Wrightly approached the club with this local race idea a couple years ago – finally, the planets (and work schedules) aligned for the partnership. When he isn’t spending time with family & friends and running the Gwynn’s Island roads, Wrightly works as a Tug Boat operator.

Traveling to Mathews?

There’s a reason that visitors call Mathews an ‘undiscovered gem’ – the unspoiled scenery, slow pace, and so much waterfront that we almost take it for granted just to name a few things. Mathews County is off the beaten path: you should plan to spend your marathon weekend with us! Visit the Mathews County Visitor Information Center website to find area activities and dining & lodging options.

Proceeds Stay Local

The Mathews Outdoor Club (MOC) often partners with local clubs & community groups to organize these events. Check our Community Support page to read more – your support of the MOC events benefits the local area. Thank you for helping us “pay it forward.”
