DECEMBER 31 – New Years Eve Party Fundraiser

Mathews Outdoor Club (MOC) is ringing in the New Year again with a fundraiser party at the Piankatank Ruritan Club in Mathews County. Tickets are on sale ($25) for individuals and for a limited number of 10-person groups. Music provided by DJ Tommy Eriksen. The ticket cost covers admission, champagne toast at midnight followed by breakfast. This event is BYOB (bring your own beverages) for adults age 21 or over and IDs are required at the door. Only 250 tickets will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis at Mathews Co Visitor Information Center (MCVIC) OR you can purchase online via Facebook (search “Mathews at Midnight”). Proceeds for this event help the MOC continue to facilitate outdoor fitness to area residents & visitors. Tickets available

APRIL 30 – Gwynn’s Island Race

Details & Registration. Now in its 8th year, the 2022 race includes options for runners & cyclists: a 4 mile run, a 10 mile bike, or combine them for a Duathlon. Hang around after the race to enjoy the festivities at one of Virginia’s most unique locations, Gwynn’s Island.


May 21 – Kickball Tournament Fundraiser

The Mathews Outdoor Club (MOC) inaugural kickball tournament will be held at Port Fun in Mathews County. Team signups will open up starting in January each year – teams of 10 or more players, ages 14 and up – will compete for fun, pride and a super-cool winners trophy. This tournament is not limited to Mathews County residents > sign up will close in early May and tournament schedule will be posted online and shared with team captains by May 8. Proceeds for this event help the MOC continue to facilitate outdoor fitness to area residents & visitors.

Details & Registration. Event #1 in our annual series of triathlons called “Micro Tris” because each leg of the traditional race has been shortened. Ideal for beginners and for experienced competitors to practice transitions. Low cost and low key and tons of fun.

AUGUST 20 – Mathews Micro Tri Series (MMTS) #4

Ideal for beginners and for experienced competitors to practice transitions. Low cost and low key and tons of fun. This is the final event in the series; hang around after the competition for fun post-race festivities.


SEPTEMBER 5 – Put-In-Creek Duathlon (Run + Kayak)

FREE every Labor Day. This annual tradition for area outdoors enthusiasts starts & finishes in downtown historic Mathews, Virginia at the Put In Creek pavilion and boat launch. The event includes a run to Williams Wharf Landing (less than 3 miles) followed by a kayak paddle (approx 2.5 miles) back to town. Since this launch area is tidal, consult the event page for start times which will coincide with high tide.
