The Mathews Outdoor Club (MOC) is urging the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to widen roadway shoulders in Mathews County, where rumble strips have made it difficult—and dangerous—for cyclists, walkers, joggers, and even litter collectors to use the roads. While the rumble strips have increased safety measures on the roadways, they now force non-motorized users into traffic, creating safety concerns. MOC has launched a petition to increase the road shoulders where possible, citing community use and large annual events like the Tour de Chesapeake and the Mathews Marathon.
MOC believes that with available state and federal funding options, the county has a strong case for prioritizing this project.
