Giving Tuesday: Support the Mathews Outdoor Club!
December 2nd
As we look ahead to Giving Tuesday, we want to share what the Mathews Outdoor Club (MOC) has accomplished this year and where your support can take us next.
MOC exists to make Mathews a healthier, more active, and connected community. Through races, cleanups, trail work, and outdoor initiatives, our volunteers work year-round to help local residents and visitors experience the best of Mathews County.
766 Athletes & $320,000+ Economic Impact
In 2025, MOC hosted four athletic events representing every corner of outdoor recreation — biking, swimming, paddling, and running.
Together, these events welcomed 766 participants and generated an estimated $320,000+ in economic impact for local restaurants, shops, lodging, gas stations, and toward local businesses providers right here in Mathews.
Blueways Trail Relaunch
While much of the work is behind the scenes, big things are happening.
The Mathews High School shop class is building 17 new information kiosks and 7 covered tables, thanks to materials donated 100% by M&M Building Supply. MOC has purchased all kiosk signage and will be donating funds to the MHS shop class once the builds are complete.
Local student Ray Hudgins is joining the project as our volunteer photographer/videographer, helping us document progress and add fresh content to the Blueways webpage.
Once installation begins, we’ll partner with the Visitor Center and Historical Society to bring history, stories, and paddling info directly to each landing.
Multi-Use Trail Development
MOC is currently researching grant opportunities to fund a feasibility study — the essential first step in building a safe, functional multi-use trail system in Mathews.
This is a long-term project, but one with enormous community benefit. We’re taking guidance from regional experts and the Triways Trail team.
Community Support Beyond Events
MOC’s impact extends far beyond race day:
✔️ We support VDOT’s Adopt-a-Highway program with annual roadside cleanups.
✔️ We serve on the Mathews Parks & Recreation Commission.
✔️ We provide timing and logistic support for the Gwynn’s Island Race at the Hatchery and the YMCA’s Jingle Bell 5K.
✔️ We’re working with the VA250 Committee to help prepare for their 2026 community walk/run/picnic event.
✔️ We’re also exploring ways to grow volunteer participation in event staffing, grant writing, and project management.
Every project we take on shares one mission: To encourage and facilitate the use of Mathews County outdoor spaces to their fullest. Whether you’re interested in a competitive athletic event, a leisure activity with your family and friends, or eager to learn about & explore the unique topography of the Virginia tidewater region, the MOC is here to assist.
