Volunteering for the Mathews Marathon

You make a living by what you get; you make a life by what you give.”

Winston Churchill

Thanks for your interest in assisting with the Mathews Marathon & Half Marathon. As you can imagine, pulling off an event like this requires a small army of helpers – and that’s where you come in. Whether you’re able to help as a volunteer or as a sponsor, we need you!

Volunteer Expectations

Volunteers need to attend a 30 minute Volunteer Orientation/Q&A Session one week prior to the event, Sat Oct 9th. On the day of the event (Sat 16th) you’ll set up at your assigned location along the route and get comfortable. Marathons are synonymous with “takes a while” for a reason: finishing times can range from 3 to 6 hours! Providing we have enough volunteers, we’ll set it up for 2 shifts (2-3 hours each).

Your station along the race course can vary in the set up: a simple table with self-serve mini water bottles and gel packets (we provide) OR use the back-end of a minivan or pick up truck in lieu of a table. We’re really looking for cheerful faces and positive mo-jo to encourage the racers as they pass you.

Marathons and Half-marathons are major milestones for many runners: often they are once-in-a-lifetime events. And whether you realize it or not, you are going to be a big part of their memory.

Our sincere appreciation,
Wrightly Reed, Race Director
Christine Johnson, Logistics
