The Mathews Outdoor Club (MOC) proudly announces the appointment of Lindsay Newell as the Marathon Event’s new Race Director. The Mathews Marathon Event—widely known as “the World’s Flattest Race Course”—will celebrate its 6th year in 2026 (Sat, October 17) and was recently certified by the USA Track & Field (USATF) as a Boston Qualifying event, further elevating its standing among runners nationwide.
A lifelong athlete and dedicated educator, Newell brings deep competitive experience and strong organizational leadership to the role. She began rowing in 7th and 8th grade, then went on to run cross country and track and play soccer in high school. Newell continued her running career at Christopher Newport University, competing in cross country and track for four years.
A proud graduate of Mathews High School (Class of 1999), Newell was inducted into the Mathews High School Hall of Fame in 2023 in recognition of her athletic achievements. She remains a lifetime runner and currently serves as a full-time Physical Education teacher at Gloucester High School, where she continues to inspire young athletes.
In 2023, Newell launched her own event planning company, Let Lindsay Coordinate, bringing professional coordination skills and community-focused planning to weddings and civic events across the region. Her combined background in athletics, education, and event management positions her well to lead the Mathews Marathon into its next chapter.

Newell and her husband, Blake Hudgins, live in Mathews County with their two beloved pet ducks, Dawn and Pretty Girl.
