Are you interested in getting involved with a Mathews County organization but aren’t sure where to look, how much time is needed or exactly what to expect? Our club hosts events in the county and we have several opportunities to help – for just a couple hours OR for an ongoing flexible role – you may find a perfect option for you.
Race Support

Water Stations (approx 2-3 hrs)
We’ll provide all the equipment, you show up for a couple hours and hand out water, gatorade and gel to race participants. Clean up the area when complete.
Volunteers needed for Gwynn’s Island Race on April 30 and Mathews Marathon & Half Marathon, October 15.

Water Safety (< 1 hour)
You’ll use your own kayak for this assignment, which lasts less than one hour. Paddle alongside swimmers while they complete a short 1/4 mile out-and-back swim. We will provide floatation equipment to carry on your boat; the water depth varies between 5-7 feet (tidal).
Volunteers needed for any/ all of the Micro Tri Series on June 4, July 9, July 30 and August 20.

Transition Area Set Up (Hugs Optional).
Active time is one hour or less, but total on-site time is 3-4 hours. Set up bike stands and fencing around the triathlon transition area before the race and tear down afterwards.
Volunteers needed for any/ all of the Micro Tri Series on June 4, July 9, July 30 and August 20.
Race Director
A few of the MOC “regulars” have stepped up to assume a larger role as Race Director for an event. We partnered together on the first one, and they assumed more responsibility each subsequent year. Due to the diverse nature of this role, the time commitment will vary – you will partner with MOC leadership and take over tasks that fit into your individual schedule.
The Micro Triathlon Series is an established event with an existing playbook and existing volunteers. Anyone interested in taking over Race Director for this series, please reach out directly to Christine at christine@mocva.net to discuss a potential transition plan.
Roadside Clean Up
MOC has adopted a 2-mile section of highway Route 14 (between Church & Ridge Roads) in Mathews County as part of the VDOT Adopt-A-Highway program. Clean Up Volunteers will be provided bags, safety vests and pick-up sticks for the scheduled date – clean up sessions last 1-2 hours and are scheduled multiple times each year. Actual dates are based on weather and are often done in conjunction with community wide cleanup dates.

Grant Writer
Longer term position needed for someone with experience identifying grant money that Mathews Outdoor Club (MOC) would qualify for and assisting in submitting applications. If you have previous experience – or eagerness to independently learn this role – please reach out to Christine at christine@mocva.net. Individual time commitment will vary – expectations are that the Grant Writer will provide as much support as their schedule allows.
I’m interested in volunteering at MOC events, especially the Islander Regatta.
