The Mathews Outdoor Club has been awarded a grant from the Mathews Community Foundation to support the purchase and upgrade of critical equipment for the Mathews Marathon, Half Marathon & Relay.
The funding will be used to supplement and replace aging event infrastructure, ensuring continued reliability and competitiveness for one of the region’s signature road races. Key improvements include the addition of a second chip timing station at the marathon midway point, as well as upgrades to course signage to improve athlete navigation and safety.

Lindsay Newell, Event Director of the Mathews Marathon, Half Marathon & Relay, emphasized the importance of the investment for both participants and the long-term sustainability of the event.
“This grant allows us to modernize essential race systems that directly impact the athlete experience,” Newell said. “It also strengthens our ability to host a Boston Qualifying-certified marathon that remains accurate, well-managed, and competitive. Support like this helps a small-town race such as ours stand alongside much larger, more established events. It truly positions the Mathews Marathon for the future.”

The Mathews Marathon is recognized as a Boston Qualifying event, drawing competitive runners from across the region and beyond. Organizers note that maintaining precise timing systems and clear course marking is essential not only for elite qualification standards but also for overall participant confidence and safety.
The Mathews Outdoor Club expressed appreciation to the Mathews Community Foundation for its investment in local recreation and community events, noting that this grant will have lasting benefits for athletes, volunteers, and spectators alike.
