The Mathews Outdoor Club has announced the appointment of Carolyn Quinn as the new Event Director for the annual Wharf to Wharf Swim, one of the region’s signature open water swimming events. A lifelong competitive swimmer and longtime volunteer supporter of endurance athletics, Quinn brings decades of swimming experience and community involvement to the role.

Carolyn began competitive swimming at age six and continued through college, earning a scholarship to attend California State University Long Beach, where she competed for the university swim program. As a youth age-group swimmer, she competed nationally at both Junior and Senior National meets in sprint and distance events, specializing in backstroke and individual medley competition.
More recently, Quinn competed with the Northern Neck Master Swim Team at several United States Masters Swimming National Championships and continues to enjoy open water swimming in the Rappahannock River.
In addition to her athletic background, Quinn has remained deeply involved in community service and youth athletics. After retiring from owning and operating Dug In Farms, she has continued supporting local student-athletes through the Lancaster High School Athletic Booster Club, where she organizes and provides complimentary pre-match meals for teams and athletes. Quinn has also volunteered with the Mathews Outdoor Club for several years, with a particular focus on encouraging participation and lifelong involvement in athletics and outdoor recreation.
“We are excited to welcome Carolyn into this leadership role,” said Christine Johnson of the Mathews Outdoor Club. “Her competitive swimming background, passion for open water events, and commitment to supporting athletes of all ages make her an outstanding fit for the Wharf to Wharf Swim.”
Carolyn lives in Irvington with her husband Albert and their faithful cattle dog, Doug.
The Wharf to Wharf Swim was founded by Mobjack Rowing Association and Mathews Land Conservancy; it is organized annually by the Mathews Outdoor Club and attracts swimmers from across the region for a unique open water experience along Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay waterways. W2W 2026 date is Saturday, August 15. More event information can be found online at MOCVA.NET/W2W.
