New Boating Course fills up in record time

USCG Auxiliary considers additional sessions for Sailing Skills & Seamanship (SSS)

The Colonial Seaport Foundation, the Mathews Outdoor Club and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, Mathews Flotilla 66, are teaming up to offer an introductory “Sailing Skills and Seamanship” class, Saturday, June 18th from 9 am to 5pm.

The class will comprise of two sessions. The morning presentation will be aboard the newly-launched colonial sloop replica “Luna”. While secured to the dock, the class will go over sailing fundamentals such as nautical and sailing terminology, sail theory, the points of sail, sail shape and trim, tacking, gybing, and sailing a course. Running and standing rigging will be discussed as well as line handling and useful knots, hitches and bends. The morning session will end with an introduction to watch-standing and the Navigation Rules.

The afternoon session will be presented at the Auxiliary’s training facility in the Cole Building on Ballpark Road in Deltaville. The discussion on Navigation Rules will continue with an emphasis on right-of-way scenarios and commonly seen navigational aids. The day will end with a chart-plotting exercise to find and report a vessel’s position using a navigational chart.

The class is the first step in the certification of prospective LUNA crew members. The only pre-requisite is completion of a state or National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) safe boating course. Space will be equally divided between the general public and those interested in joining LUNA as crew. This class will be limited to 12-students.
