Mathews Micro Tri Series

$30 for a Triathlon?

We’ve created a SERIES of our very popular Micro-Triathlon events at Williams Wharf in Mathews County, Virginia. This series kicked off in 2018 and is back for another season. MMTS #3 event has options for Micro Triathlon OR Sprint Triathlon.

What’s a Micro-Triathlon? The micro triathlon contains the same components of a “regular” triathlon: swim-bike-run, with much shorter distances for each of those 3 legs. The open water swim is 0.2 miles, the bike leg is 8 miles and the run portion is 2 miles.

Did you know that it was MOC’s founder, Christine Johnson, who initially coined the term “Micro Triathlon” back when the first competitors did this short tri course in 2015.

MICRO TRI BIKE ROUTE UPDATE effective 2021. We temporarily changed the 8-mile course to avoid some loose gravel left behind by county road crews, and the feedback was so positive that we’re keeping the change. It is still 8 miles long, with the first 3m and last 2m unchanged – the route tweaks provide longer straight-aways, fewer turns and eliminate a confusing intersection. Stay tuned for our updated video!

Timing & Registration Options: we electronically time each event to include splits for each leg and for the transitions. On the second 2021 series event – MMTS #2 – a new course record was set by Gunnar Eichler – 38:59.1 beating his own previous course record of 43:02.4 in 2020.

Awards: Series awards are presented after the final event. Top prize will be awarded to the fastest overall finisher – time combined for all events. Depending on the number of series participants, we may be able to add in recognition prizes for the fastest combined swim, bike, run, and transition times (overall top finisher will not be eligible for these skill-specific awards).

If you miss one event or more, you can still be considered for a series-based prize. We will use the final finisher’s time for the event(s) you missed as your time for that event.

Swag. Anyone who completes all series events – regardless of time – will receive a commemorative MMTS hoodie sweatshirt. A sweatshirt may not have appeal in the summer – but by the end of the series, you will look forward to it! Sweatshirts will also be available for purchase upon request ($35 if we have to mail it, $30 for local pickup).
